The first answer must always be, "Ask a fellow traveller." It's rare to meet anyone who has experienced the warmth and hospitality of the Turkish people and not wanted to return to this wonderfully broad and diverse country.
When you watch TV history programmes and later visit the featured site, it never seems the same does it? Out of the camera-shot there is an overwhelming City nudging the antiquities, tower blocks, hotels and the dreaded visitor centre encroach into the magic created by the presenter. How did they make it look so inviting? What did they do with all the people that were on my transfer bus?
Well, at the vast majority of antiquities and ancient sites in Turkey, and there are a great many of them unspoiled by commercialisation - if not by weather, nature and the odd thief, most are "as seen on TV". There are more Greek ruins in Turkey than there are in Greece!
After 10,000 years or more Turkey, in all its histories, a cradle of civilization, a crossroads for travellers of the past and future, is a place where you can still chance to turn over a stone shedding warm sunlight on art no-one in living memory has ever seen before. One of guests did exactly that in 2006. In our ever shrinking globe there are few places, especially 240 minutes from Gatwick, where you can get this thrill relatively often...while out for a walk in the woods or along a sandy beach.

Imagination becomes mainstream, there's probably no-one else around even in high season. You are sharing yourself with the myths and legends still being translated for our understanding; St. Paul or Alexander the Great walked exactly where you are standing, saw what you are seeing may have touched what you are touching and they were only yesterdays visitors.
Turkey is a vast country with a population only a little more that the UK in nearly four times the area. There is no premium on space. People have time to live; quality of life is high even if incomes are on the low side. From townies to nomadic shepherds hidden away high in the cool mountains carpeted with wild flowers, the Turkish peoples friendliness is unfailingly attractive.
Be seduced by it, knowing you could be making friends for life. Explore the variety of the geography from high plateau and mountains to tranquil coastal valleys and sumptuous empty beaches. If you like more commercial centres built for tourists then the welcome is the same but be tempted to get out and find the real Turkey, you will reap untold rewards.
A secular state, Turkey is a modern country fitting in well with all the luxuries of its European neighbours, the beer is good and Turkish wines are well worth exploring.
A PhotoLycia holiday/workshop is one of the best ways to start a love affair with Turkey.
