Kaya Koy - June 2006

For this, our first visit to to Turkey, we counted ourselves most fortunate in discovering Gunay's Garden - a little bit of paradise - in the historic village of Kaya Koy. It proved to be an ideal place to stay and enjoy the feeling of being in an authentic Turkey away from the main tourist centres, but still with in reach of everything that this fascinating country has to offer. We didn't do much this time but are determined to return to explore further its wonderful country side, discover its ancient ruins and taste more of its cuisine at the many village restaurants.

What follows is a selection from the walks we did, the visits we made and the restaurants we enjoyed.

Walks from Kaya Koy

We only managed three walks in the six days we had at Gunay's Garden, although we did plenty of exploring in the village and the ghost town. It was so difficult to tear ourselves away from the Garden and pool!

Difficulty

Olu Deniz A stunning walk through varied terrain and some shady forested sections with breath taking views of the turquoise coast. Steep in places, with some scrambling required.
Coldwater Bay Starts with a comfortable climb through the ghost town and a gentle descent into Cold Water Bay. Extensive views in both directions. Quite a short walk but quite a hard climb on the return leg, especially in the heat of the day.
Afkule Some road walking but rewarded with great views and the feeling of being in rural Turkey. The climax is the fascinating, cliff-defying monastery. Easy with several miles on level roads and only a moderate climb to the monastery.
