FETHIYE MARKET

Lots of fresh produce

We could do with selling a few tomatoes

Introduction

A trip to Fethiye is recommended in all the guide books and we decided that this had to be one of our day's out. The real bonus was having Tolga (villa owner) as our guide, with his invaluable insider knowledge.

Our Day at the Market

We made a reasonably early start with Tolga driving us down into Fethiye once he had negotiated the reverse turns needed to back the 4-wheel drive out of the tiny road leading to the villas. The main purpose of the trip was to experience the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of the market. It is set up once a week under a huge area of canvas sheeting, and accomodates sections for food, clothes and hardware, and tourist bric-a-brac.

We were more interested in the food sections rather than the rest of the market. For people in search of of some holiday bargains there was plenty of scope. I was amused by cries of four tee shirts for ten pounds. All the brand names were available altough I suspect that they were not all genuine. It was a great atmosphere to wander around in, but my preference was for the food section. It was great having Tolga along who encouraged us to try samples from the stalls. We couldn't resist buying a few spices, some cheese and a few veg. I could have walked around for hours buying vegetables galore and still would have had change from a fiver.

Tolga told us that come July and August the temperatures become unbearable in the market even under the shade of the canvas.

We had worked up quite an appetite by this time and Tolga took us for lunch time pancakes at one of the market restuarants.

The day didn't finish there as after lunch our guide took us down by the quay and to the fish market. That could have been another culinary experience as you can buy your fish from the stalls and take it to the nearby restuarants to be cooked!

Our return journey to Gunay's Garden was via Husaranu which is a complete holiday centre for mainly British tourists. Tolga was keen to show us his restuarant there ( The Bees Knees) where we enjoyed an afternoon beer.

Fethiya market is not to be missed and having Tolga for a guide was an added bonus making the day out most enjoyable.
