You will need to bring:
| 1. | A Camera | While this photo-workshop will appeal to serious amateur or
professional photographers, our objective is to increase your skills, provide
interesting and sometimes unusual subjects and have a lot of enjoyment
looking closely at our photography. We mainly use D SLRs and expect
that most photographers attending will have similar equipment. However, many
prefer film or have fixed lens cameras or medium/large format. All types are
welcome from 'point and shoot' to top D SLRs. We use Nikon and Fuji cameras
ourselves.
N.B. Batteries enough for all day in the field/chargers & N. Europe 2 pin adapters (220-240v) |
| 2. | Lenses | Bring the lenses designed for the type of photography you want to do. Macro lenses or close-up filters open up a new range of subject matter. Don't forget caps for each end... |
| 3. | Filters | Standard needs are a UV filter and a polariser (circular for zoom lenses). Other grads, ND or special effects can be useful. You'll need a system that fits all your lenses. |
| 4. | Tripod | A good sturdy tripod that is capable of holding your camera still. One that you can weigh down with a camera bag or bag of rocks is best. We do have tripods you can borrow. |
| 5. | Camera bag | Bring one designed for general use. Rucksack and backpack bags
are useful if walking/climbing. Make sure it holds all your kit. A waterproof
cover for your bag - when it rains...it rains. |
| 6. | Reflector | A useful tool is a 5 in 1 reflector. Especially for natural light portrait work or macro. You can share ours - This item is not essential but a useful extra. |
| 7. | Bean bag | Useful for steadiness where speed is of the essence. |
| 8. | Cleaning kit/changing bag | Sometimes, working outdoors in dusty environments, it's a good idea to bring a lens cleaner/brush and a bag in which to change lenses. (keeps the CCD clean) |
| 9. | Cable release | Manual or electronic (or you can always use the delay timer to cut down on kit). |
| 10. | Flash | Flash for fill-in or reduced light is always useful and gives extra pizzazz to macro shots. Off camera lead is also useful. |
| 11. | Lightweight groundsheet | Consider using a large bin bag or sheet of plastic. It weighs nothing but can keep you clean/dry if you are working on the ground. |
| 12. | Film or storage media | Please bring enough media for your workshop-holiday. Its expensive in Turkey and your favourite type may not be available. As a guide, most photographers shooting RAW images use around 15Mb-25Mb per frame. 4Gb is not enough on most days! If you do not shoot in RAW much smaller capacity cards are fine. We do have download facilities. N.B. Downloads can be made each evening. |
| 13. | A hat with rim & clothing | The sun can be very strong in spring and autumn so protect the back of your neck. A peak/brim also shades your viewfinder. UV protected clothing is also a good idea though not essential. Shorts and walking shoes are the main apparel. A lightweight waterproof is also useful and sometimes essential. |
| 14. | Notebook & pencil | While most of the photo detail is recorded on DSLRs you may want to make notes of where you are, conditions, lens used etc. The itinerary is a good guide but may well change from day to day |
| 15. | Laptop? | If you have enough room in your luggage to pack a laptop for personal review of your pics it's a great benefit. We do have three laptops for this use on site (with card readers) but with eight photographers you may be in a queue. Useful kit is a Photobank/ Epson 4000 etc.that stores up to 40GB of photos without the need for a PC/Mac. |
| Optional kit | Items 6,7,8,9,10,11,14,15 above |
The accommodation has all the normal necessities of home including towels, tea towels, dishwasher tablets etc. so the only other requirements are your day to day clothing.
In late April, May and October the days are likely to be warm to hot with cooler evenings. There is occasional rain and we find that the very lightest rain cover/cape is all that you will need.
Don't forget that you will be out in the elements all day so rain/shock protection for your equipment is essential.
Clothing
Shorts/and shirts are the normal day wear with a light sweater or top for the evenings. Clothing with UV protection is best for the conditions we describe. Early Spring and October workshops are cooler so watch the weather sites just before you depart.
Jeans are popular but not always the best choice as they can get heavy and sweaty. They don't offer much UV protection and if it does get cold are not good as wind-stoppers. Lightweight walking trousers/convertible shorts prove most popular.
You will also need to wear a hat as the sun index can be very strong even when its not very hot.
Footwear
You should also wear strong shoes or boots if we are walking away from the vehicle. Some people wear all-terrain sandals and these are fine for most days. We travel to and from Turkey in walking boots to save on "checked in baggage" allowance.
Baggage and Insurance
The baggage allowance is usually 20Kg or 25Kg per person although some airlines
allow only 15Kg free and charge for the extra Kg. There is then an excess
baggage
charge if your checked in luggage is over 20Kg. Expect around £5-10 per
Kilo. Don't forget, you are also usually allowed 5Kg of hand luggage that must
fit in with airline sizes.
We find that the Think Tank Aiport range
of bags fits easily in the overhead lockers and is accepted at most airports/with
most airlines.
You should also check for restrictions in place at the time of flying.
If you pack your valuable equipment in your main luggage make sure its well
protected against shock.
You must ensure that you are covered by reliable travel insurance for all our holidays. We also highly recommend kit insurance too.
